The BCN Antirumors initiative celebrates its 15th anniversary, highlighting its role in transforming discriminatory narratives. A series of events will culminate in December.

Fifteen years ago, Barcelona launched the BCN Antirumors Strategy to tackle the pervasive issue of discrimination and prejudice within its diverse community. This initiative has evolved into a cornerstone of public policy, fostering collaboration among local entities, citizens, and government to combat harmful stereotypes and promote intercultural understanding.

The year-long celebration includes various activities aimed at reinforcing the network’s identity and expanding participation. Among these is the inaugural Youth Antirumors Training, designed to empower young people with critical intercultural perspectives. This program emphasizes personal experiences while addressing racism as a social structure that requires collective action for change.

In December, an open antirumors day will invite citizens to engage through workshops and presentations. The festivities will conclude with an institutional event marking the strategy’s significant impact over the past decade and a half.

The inception of this pioneering strategy in 2010 was driven by two primary needs: responding to community demands for combating rumors about diversity and recognizing that existing prejudices hindered coexistence. It operates on three main pillars: training, participation, and communication, aiming to generate knowledge while activating civic engagement.

Over time, the BCN Antirumors Strategy has broadened its focus to include structural analyses of racism mechanisms that perpetuate discrimination based on origin, ethnicity, or religion. This comprehensive approach addresses institutional racism while revising social imaginaries and intervening across communicative and relational domains.

Today, the BCN Antirumors Network comprises over 1,100 members, including nearly 500 organizations alongside individual participants. Since its launch, more than 2,100 individuals have undergone antirumor training through over 100 sessions. The network has organized more than 600 activities, engaging around 20,000 participants, making it a vital tool for awareness-raising and educational outreach in Barcelona.

This initiative also produces various resources aimed at fostering critical analysis of interculturality through pedagogical materials and communication campaigns tailored for local contexts.

Barcelona’s involvement extends beyond local initiatives; it participates in youth antirumor summits organized by the Council of Europe. In recent years, young representatives from Barcelona have traveled to Tenerife and Castelló to exchange transformative strategies with peers from other cities.

The culmination of this year’s celebrations will not only reflect on past achievements but also set new goals for future endeavors against discrimination. Citizens interested in participating can find details about upcoming events on the official BCN Antirumors website as December approaches.
