The city of Barcelona has launched an artistic initiative to beautify the storefronts of 185 local businesses. This project aims to foster community engagement and support local commerce.
In a bold move to revitalize its local shopping scene, Barcelona has initiated the ‘Persianes que fan barri’ project, which will see 185 shop shutters transformed into colorful murals. This initiative, backed by a budget exceeding €250,000, is part of the city’s commitment to enhancing the vibrancy of neighborhood commerce.
The program is being executed in collaboration with the Barcelona Creativity & Design Foundation (BCDF) and artistic direction from Rebobinart. Eleven local artists have been commissioned to design and paint these murals, which will adorn shops linked to 15 commercial associations across various districts.
This effort aligns with Barcelona’s designation as the European Capital of Local Commerce, aiming not just to beautify but also to strengthen community ties. Raquel Gil, Deputy Mayor for Social Rights and Economic Promotion, emphasized that this project enhances customer experiences while fostering a more dynamic and cohesive commercial environment.
“The street-level commerce in Barcelona is vital for addressing challenges such as changing consumer habits and digitalization,” Gil stated. “We want to support initiatives that invigorate this sector, shaping how residents interact with their urban space.”
The initiative comes at a time when many cities are grappling with declining foot traffic in retail areas due to online shopping trends. Historical data shows that similar artistic interventions in urban centers can lead to increased patronage; for instance, cities like Melbourne have seen up to a 30% increase in foot traffic following similar projects.
The murals are expected not only to attract customers but also serve as a canvas for cultural expression within neighborhoods. By integrating art into everyday spaces, Barcelona hopes to create an inviting atmosphere that encourages both locals and tourists alike.
This project is part of broader efforts under the Pla Endreça program, which aims at improving public spaces across five districts through collaboration with various trade guilds. The city’s approach reflects a growing trend where urban art plays a crucial role in economic revitalization.
The unveiling of these murals will take place throughout 2026 as artists complete their work on each storefront. Residents can look forward to seeing these vibrant additions emerge over the coming months, contributing positively not only visually but also economically.
For those interested in supporting local businesses while enjoying these new artworks, many shops involved will host special events during their mural unveilings. Check local listings or visit participating stores for details on upcoming celebrations and promotions.
