The Catalan government has approved a significant investment to establish a Genomic Editing Center for cereals in Lleida, aiming to enhance agricultural research and crop resilience.
A new chapter in agricultural innovation is set to unfold in Lleida as the Catalan government allocates €3.8 million for the establishment of the Genomic Editing Center for Cereals (CEGC). This initiative, announced on Tuesday, aims to bolster research capabilities within the region and is expected to play a crucial role in addressing agricultural challenges.
The center will be located on the campus of the Technical School of Agricultural and Forestry Engineering and Veterinary Science at the University of Lleida. It will operate under Agrotecnio, which is part of Catalonia’s network of research centers known as CERCA. The investment will be phased over three years, with €3.65 million earmarked from 2026 to 2028 specifically for project development, construction, and initial research operations.
“Today marks a proud moment for our country,” stated Núria Montserrat, the regional minister responsible for Research and Universities during the project’s unveiling. She emphasized that by 2028, they expect to have a fully operational facility dedicated to vital agricultural research.
The lead researcher on this ambitious project, Teresa Capell, expressed her enthusiasm: “For me, this is a dream come true after 30 years in genetic engineering.” Her commitment underscores the long-term vision behind this initiative.
The director of Agrotecnio Foundation, José Antonio Bonet, also shared his sentiments about the project’s significance. He highlighted it as an “exciting day” filled with gratitude towards local stakeholders who supported this endeavor.
The CEGC will utilize cutting-edge genomic editing technologies aimed at making precise modifications to plant genomes. These advancements are designed to accelerate the development of crop varieties that possess desirable agronomic traits such as drought resistance and improved nutrient efficiency.

The first phase of operations will focus on rice cultivation—a strategic crop particularly important in regions like Delta de l’Ebre and Pals.
