A vibrant bougainvillea on the corner of Rambla Catalunya and Còrsega has received a new lease on life with the installation of a protective pergola, marking a significant victory for local residents. Maria Ponsà, an advocate for the plant’s preservation, expressed her relief and gratitude: “Finally, we have the pergola; what a relief.” This project comes after concerns arose two years ago when strong winds threatened to uproot the cherished shrub.
The initiative to safeguard this iconic plant was spearheaded by community members and local benefactors. Carmen Cervera and Jordi Casanovas were instrumental in financing the structure, while lawyer Pilar Pallarès and numerous citizens like Lluís Permanyer rallied support through petitions. Ponsà noted, “I can only express my gratitude to everyone who contributed to this cause,” emphasizing the collaborative spirit that made this project possible.
The bougainvillea is now officially listed in the Petits Paisatges Urbans catalog, ensuring its protection under municipal regulations. Following its installation, plans are underway for an inauguration celebration post-summer to commemorate this achievement. The event will not only celebrate the new pergola but also aim to foster ongoing community involvement.
In addition to festivities, there are plans to establish an association named Amics de la Buguenvil·lea. Membership will require a nominal fee of one euro per year from residents, which will help cover maintenance costs associated with caring for the bougainvillea. Ponsà has committed to continuing her role as caretaker for this beloved plant.
