Severe weather warnings have prompted Catalonia's Civil Protection to activate the Inuncat emergency plan. Intense storms are expected to hit the region, raising flood risks.

Catalonia is on high alert as the Civil Protection of the Generalitat has reactivated its special emergency plan for flooding, known as Inuncat, in response to forecasts of intense storms this Friday and Saturday. The decision comes after the Catalan Meteorological Service (SMC) warned of heavy rainfall that could exceed 40 liters per square meter within just half an hour, particularly affecting regions such as Ripollès, Berguedà, Lluçanès, and Osona.

The anticipated rainfall is expected to extend into western areas of Catalonia on Saturday, impacting regions including Alta Ribagorça, Pallars Jussà, Pallars Sobirà, and Alt Urgell. These conditions are likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms and potentially violent weather phenomena such as strong wind gusts and hail.

The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) and the Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE), which oversee water management in these areas, have announced that they will increase monitoring efforts due to the risk of river swelling. This proactive approach aims to mitigate potential flooding impacts in vulnerable zones.

In light of these developments, Civil Protection has urged residents to exercise caution during outdoor activities and travel. Areas near streams or torrents are particularly at risk for rapid water accumulation. Local municipalities have been advised to review their usual flood-prone spots and implement necessary preventive measures ahead of the predicted downpour.

This situation echoes past incidents where similar weather patterns led to significant flooding across various parts of Spain. For instance, in October 2021, heavy rains caused extensive damage in several provinces after a similar storm system swept through the region.

As communities prepare for possible disruptions over the weekend due to adverse weather conditions, residents are encouraged to stay informed through local news outlets and heed any advisories from authorities regarding safety measures. Those living in flood-prone areas should consider securing their properties and having an emergency plan ready should conditions worsen.
