A new mental health center is taking shape in La Seu d’Urgell, with construction progressing steadily and an expected opening date in early 2027. Once completed, the facility will offer a total of 97 beds, addressing the growing need for mental health services in the region.
The center is being built on the site of the former Diocesan Seminary and will span approximately 6,000 square meters. Designed with patient care in mind, it features a bright and versatile layout intended to support therapeutic processes. This initiative not only aims to improve local healthcare but also promises to generate between 70 and 75 jobs, both directly and indirectly.
Among its innovative features is the Ágora space, a community recovery unit that will allow users to access therapeutic support without prior appointments. This approach reflects a shift towards more accessible mental health care.
“This project dignifies mental health in the Pyrenees,” stated Joan Barrera, mayor of La Seu d’Urgell.
The regional government has emphasized the importance of this facility as part of a broader strategy to provide quality healthcare close to home. Ramon Espadaler, Conseller de Justícia i Qualitat Democràtica, highlighted that it would significantly reduce travel for patients and their families seeking treatment.
The center will cater not only to residents of Catalonia but also those from Andorra, with 44 beds allocated specifically for Andorran patients. This cross-border collaboration underscores the commitment to enhancing mental health resources across regions.
Joan Orrit, manager of Fundación Hermanas Hospitalarias Sant Boi—responsible for operating the new service—explained that various types of care will be available. These include medium- and long-term hospitalization options as well as day hospitals for both adults and children. The aim is to complement existing services while providing comprehensive support tailored to individual needs.
This development comes at a time when mental health awareness is increasingly prioritized globally.
