A bear has killed a mare and a foal while injuring a calf in Pallars Sobirà. Farmers are demanding better monitoring of wildlife to protect their livestock.
In a shocking incident that has rattled the farming community of Pallars Sobirà, two local ranchers reported that a bear attacked their livestock, resulting in the deaths of a mare and her foal, while also injuring a calf. The attack occurred in the mountainous region of Isil, specifically in the valley known as Roca Blanca.
The distressing discovery was made by one of the ranchers on Saturday during a routine check on her animals. In addition to the fatalities, she noted that another mare and foal are currently missing. This incident follows closely on the heels of another bear attack just days earlier, where three sheep were killed near a farm located only 500 meters from Isil.
Following these attacks, both ranchers promptly reported the incidents to Agents Rurals, who arrived at the scene to document the situation. The ranchers attribute these attacks to bear activity based on the nature of the injuries inflicted on their animals and the disappearance of some livestock. Agents Rurals have since opened an investigation into these alarming events.
The ranchers are now calling for enhanced communication regarding bear sightings in their area. They have requested timely notifications when wildlife monitoring teams detect bears near grazing lands so they can implement preventive measures to safeguard their herds. One rancher expressed frustration over the lack of information available from local authorities about bear movements.
“We need access to data about where bears are spotted,” she stated. “It’s crucial for us to know when they’re nearby.”
To further bolster safety measures, one owner plans to approach both Alt Àneu’s municipal council and Isil’s Decentralized Municipal Entity for access to locations where wildlife cameras have been installed throughout the municipality. Currently, neither local officials nor farmers possess adequate information regarding bear presence in their vicinity.
<pInterestingly, this is not an isolated issue; similar incidents have been reported across various regions where human-wildlife interactions are becoming increasingly common due to habitat encroachment and changing ecosystems. In fact, historical data shows that such conflicts have surged by over 30% in rural areas over the past decade as wildlife populations rebound.<pas concerns mount within this close-knit farming community about future encounters with bears, residents remain vigilant. A local woman recently spotted a bear crossing a path near where these attacks occurred, underscoring ongoing fears about wildlife interactions.
<pfarmers are urged to stay alert and report any unusual animal behavior or sightings immediately. For those living or working near affected areas like Isil or Bonabé, it is advisable to keep livestock secured during dusk and dawn when bears are most active.
