A firefighter in Barcelona is under investigation for a suspected sexual assault that occurred in the Zona Franca fire station. The city has taken immediate action, including disciplinary measures against the accused.
The Barcelona Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an investigation into a firefighter following allegations of a sexual assault that reportedly took place on June 7. The incident came to light when the victim awoke disoriented inside the suspect’s vehicle at the Zona Franca fire station and called emergency services for help.
Emergency responders from the Sistema d’Emergències Médiques (SEM) transported her to Hospital Clínic, where she disclosed that she had been assaulted but could not recall many details, only that she had spent time with the accused and they had consumed drugs and alcohol together. A patrol from the Guardia Urbana also arrived at the scene to begin preliminary investigations.
The prosecutor’s inquiry will determine whether a violation occurred and if it took place within or outside of the fire station premises. The firefighter entered duty at 8:00 AM, bringing the woman into restricted areas of the facility before leaving her alone while he worked.
In response to these serious allegations, Barcelona City Council reported the suspect to prosecutors and has opened a disciplinary file against him, resulting in his suspension from duty without pay. This firefighter joined the force two promotions ago.
The Guardia Urbana is conducting an internal review to clarify what transpired that night, focusing on both the alleged assault and how a civilian gained access to restricted areas without oversight. Officials have noted that allowing unauthorized individuals into such facilities violates established protocols.
The Deputy Mayor for Security, Albert Batlle, emphasized the “extreme seriousness” of these allegations, stating that city officials are acting with utmost determination while ensuring all procedures are respected.
The city is also considering joining as a private prosecution should this case proceed to court and has pledged support for the victim throughout this process.
While specific details regarding where or when exactly this alleged assault occurred remain unclear beyond its timing during early hours on June 7, it was confirmed that after entering his vehicle at work on Sunday morning, she remained there until awakening later.
Internal Measures Implemented
This incident has prompted broader actions beyond criminal proceedings. The Barcelona City Council announced several measures aimed at preserving both public trust in its firefighters and their professional integrity. These include establishing an ethical unit within Servei de Protecció Civil, Prevenció i Extinció d’Incendis i Salvament, drafting plans for perimeter surveillance cameras across all city fire stations, and reviewing existing operational guidelines regarding visitor access.
Sebastià Massagué, head of SPCEIS stated they will be “intransigent” against any behavior undermining their commitment to uphold both image and prestige of their service.
This review will also address prohibitions on alcohol consumption within fire stations and enhance ethical training content in recruitment and promotion courses for firefighters. Such reforms aim not only to prevent future incidents but also reinforce accountability among personnel.
The ongoing investigation is expected to unfold over coming weeks as authorities gather evidence and testimonies related to this troubling case. For those seeking more information or support regarding similar issues, local advocacy groups are available through community centers across Barcelona.
