A major operation by law enforcement has led to the arrest of 23 individuals linked to two human trafficking networks in Catalonia. Six victims have been rescued from exploitation.
In a significant crackdown on human trafficking, authorities have arrested 23 individuals, including 15 women and 8 men, connected to two criminal organizations operating in Barcelona and Girona. This operation, executed by the Mossos d’Esquadra and the Policía Nacional, resulted in the liberation of six victims who had been lured with false job offers and subsequently subjected to abusive debts.
The investigation began in October 2025, triggered by healthcare professionals at a hospital in Sabadell who identified a potential victim. Their alert initiated police protocols that led to a coordinated effort between local police and national forces. On June 17, authorities conducted 16 raids, targeting eleven brothels across the regions of Barcelona and Girona, seizing over 200,000 euros, drugs, and three luxury vehicles.
The collaborative investigation revealed that these networks operated with a clear hierarchical structure. Members were assigned specific roles ranging from victim recruitment to financial management. Victims were often targeted based on their vulnerabilities, with traffickers financing their travel under false pretenses only to impose crippling debts upon arrival.
The operational dynamics included rotating victims among various properties while maintaining tight control over their movements. Investigators noted that some brothels could see over 100 clients within just a few hours, offering low-cost services that significantly undercut market rates.
This extensive operation not only aimed at dismantling these networks but also focused on protecting those exploited within them. The six rescued victims included the initial complainant as well as additional women liberated during subsequent investigations.
The police’s meticulous approach involved gathering testimonies from victims which proved crucial for understanding the operational methods of these criminal groups. These accounts detailed the coercive tactics employed by traffickers, including threats and physical control mechanisms.
The criminal activities spanned multiple municipalities such as Sabadell, Vic, Manresa, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Sitges, Granollers, Terrassa, Girona, Palafrugell, Mataró among others. The network’s operations relied heavily on advertising sexual services online while managing several brothels simultaneously.
The culmination of this investigation saw judicial proceedings commence on June 19 when all detained individuals were presented before the Tribunal d’Instància in Manresa. The judge ordered provisional imprisonment without bail for eight key suspects—five women and three men—and mandated temporary closure of five brothels linked to the identified victims to prevent further criminal activity.
This operation marks one of the largest efforts against human trafficking in recent years within Catalonia. Authorities are continuing their investigations into these networks with an eye toward potential further arrests as they work to dismantle any remaining elements of this illicit trade.
