The iconic Tour de France is set to make its way through Castelldefels, Gavà, and Viladecans on July 5, marking a significant event for cycling enthusiasts and local residents alike. This second stage of the race will connect Tarragona to Barcelona and is expected to draw considerable crowds while causing substantial disruptions to traffic.
In Castelldefels, the race will traverse the entire paseo Marítimo. Cyclists will enter through Port Ginesta and exit via Calle 23 towards Barcelona. The promotional caravan is scheduled to roll through around 1:05 PM, with the main peloton expected at approximately 3:00 PM. The most critical period for mobility issues will be between 12:30 PM and 3:30 PM, during which total traffic cuts will be enforced along the paseo Marítimo.
The city has urged residents to prepare for these changes by planning their travel routes in advance. Alongside road closures, there will also be temporary parking bans in affected areas.
Gavà will experience two phases of disruption as part of the Tour’s route. Initially, cyclists will navigate a little over four kilometers along the waterfront before moving onto Calle de Calafell and Calle de Salou. They will continue down Avenida de Europa and Avenida del Mar. Similar restrictions on traffic flow and public transport modifications are anticipated during this time.
The race will return briefly to Gavà after passing through Viladecans. This second passage covers about one-and-a-half kilometers along Carretera de Santa Creu de Calafell before continuing on Avenida de Joan Carles I.
For those looking for alternative routes during this busy day, they can use streets like Calle de Antoni Gaudí or Rambla de Pompeu Fabra to bypass some of the closures.
Viladecans is also gearing up for its share of excitement as it welcomes the Tour from Gavà via Carretera B-210 around 3:15 PM. The cyclists will proceed along B-204 through Camino del Mar before reaching Avenida de la Generalitat where an intermediate sprint is planned. In total, six kilometers of Viladecans streets will be part of this prestigious cycling event.
This year’s Tour promises an exceptional experience not only for participants but also for spectators who can witness elite athletes competing at high speeds right in their neighborhoods. Municipal forecasts suggest that approximately 1.3 million fans are expected across three days of events leading up to this stage.
The festivities kick off with a presentation of cyclists at Sagrada Familia on July 2 followed by an inaugural team time trial within Barcelona on July 4.
The logistical challenges posed by hosting such a large-scale event have prompted collaboration among local municipalities. The Diputación de Barcelona has offered assistance with necessary street repairs across eighteen municipalities involved in the race route at no additional cost beyond a pre-approved budget of €480,976.31 (including VAT).
