A forest fire in the municipality of Vilaller, located in the province of Lleida, has rapidly expanded, affecting a provisional area of 108.97 hectares. This includes approximately 35.87 hectares within the protective perimeter of the renowned Aigüestortes National Park. The situation escalated over the weekend, with reports indicating that only 74.97 hectares were impacted just a day prior.
The local firefighting team, known as the Bomberos de la Generalitat, has issued warnings to hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to refrain from visiting the affected area in the Pyrenees region. They emphasized that despite recent rain, it was insufficient to quell the ongoing blaze.
“The fire remains active,” stated a spokesperson for the firefighters on their social media account. “Yesterday’s storms provided minimal relief, and today’s weather conditions continue to pose challenges.” The team is primarily utilizing aerial resources due to the treacherous terrain, which complicates ground operations.
The firefighting efforts are focused on preventing further spread towards critical areas such as the Valle de Bohí and Cavallers. There is also concern about potential pirocumulus formations that could exacerbate conditions on the left flank of the fire, which has a potential reach of up to 270 hectares.
This incident highlights an alarming trend; wildfires have become increasingly frequent in this region over recent years. In fact, last summer saw similar fires ravage over 150 hectares nearby, prompting authorities to reassess their emergency response strategies.
The local government had previously lifted restrictions on hiking and high-altitude activities following improvements in fire conditions but has now reinstated warnings due to renewed instability. As firefighters work diligently to contain this blaze, they are also preparing for possible evacuations should conditions worsen.
