Catalonia is bracing for intense storms and significant temperature drops, prompting urgent safety warnings from Protecció Civil. The region's beaches have been closed due to dangerous conditions.
Severe weather alerts have been issued across Catalonia as the region prepares for a series of violent storms expected to bring heavy rainfall and hail over the coming days. Protecció Civil has urged residents to take precautions, particularly in areas such as Vallès Oriental, Maresme, Selva, and Osona, where the risk of extreme weather is at its highest. This warning follows a recent heatwave that has left many unprepared for the sudden shift in conditions.
The forecast indicates that temperatures will plummet significantly, with some regions experiencing gusts of wind exceeding 90 kilometers per hour. The Servicio Meteorológico de Cataluña (Meteocat) has classified the danger level as maximum—6 out of 6—due to anticipated hailstones larger than two centimeters in diameter. These conditions are expected to peak on Friday, when heavy rain could lead to localized flooding.
In addition to the storm warnings, coastal areas are under red flags due to strong currents and high waves. Tragically, a man in his fifties lost his life at Cunit beach after ignoring safety warnings and swimming despite the red flag being raised. Lifeguards attempted resuscitation but were unsuccessful; this incident marks the 20th drowning reported on Catalan beaches since June 15 when the bathing season began.
The prealert status of Inuncat has been activated by Protecció Civil as they monitor potential flash floods in local streams and rivers within the Ebro basin. The authorities are particularly concerned about rapid water level rises following heavy rainfall.
This abrupt change in weather patterns comes from a cold front moving down from the north, which is also affecting other Spanish regions that have recently experienced prolonged heat. Residents are advised to stay indoors during severe weather events and avoid unnecessary travel.
As part of ongoing safety measures, swimming is prohibited at several beaches including those in Cunit, Cubelles, Calafell, and most parts of Tarragona due to hazardous sea conditions. Red flags are currently displayed at multiple Tarragona beaches including Miracle Beach and Arrabassada Beach.
The public is reminded that swimming under red flag conditions poses serious risks due to strong waves and currents. Compliance with these regulations is crucial for personal safety during this volatile weather period.
For those planning outdoor activities or beach visits in Catalonia over the next few days, it’s advisable to check local weather updates frequently and heed all advisories from Protecció Civil.
