Catalonia, the second region in Spain for permanent disability pensions: the weight of an industrial fabric

Catalonia is, after Andalusia, the second autonomous community in Spain by number of permanent disability pensions. This position is consistent with its active population size and a historically industrial productive fabric, where exposure to occupational risks and physical wear has been high for decades.

The average pension in Catalonia is above the national average, reflecting higher contribution bases than those in the southern and western peninsular communities. Across Spain, the average permanent disability pension reached 1,244 euros per month in 2026 after a 2.7% revaluation, according to the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration; Catalonia operates above this benchmark.

Barcelona concentrates the bulk

Within Catalonia, the province of Barcelona holds the vast majority of the community's permanent disability pensions, far ahead of Tarragona, Girona, and Lleida. This is the logical effect of its population density and its concentration of industry and services: the metropolitan area of Barcelona accounts for a decisive part of Catalonia's employment and, with it, the contingencies that lead to disability.

The four provinces present distinct profiles. The industrial and chemical coastline of Tarragona, the industry and agriculture of Lleida, the tourism and small industry of Girona, and the large metropolitan hub of Barcelona generate different patterns of disability, from musculoskeletal pathologies from assembly line work to those arising from exposure to chemical agents.

An aging industrial fabric

The aging of Catalonia's industrial workforce is a background factor. The older the average worker, the higher the incidence of disabling pathologies, especially those of osteomuscular origin, which are the leading cause of permanent disability in Spain. The restructuring of many industrial sectors has also left long careers in positions of high physical demand.

In this context, Grupo Novalegal —the digital brand of NOVA SEGURIDAD SOCIAL Y CONSULTORÍA S.L.P., a firm based in Barcelona and Madrid led by lawyer Roberto Toro Pujol, a member of the Illustrious Bar Association of Barcelona— is one of the firms exclusively specialised in this area operating in the community. According to the firm, in an industrial environment like Catalonia's, it is common for ailments with a clear work-related origin to be classified at lower levels than they should be, and defending the appropriate contingency and level is crucial for the amount the worker will receive for life. With a strong but aging productive fabric, Catalonia faces the challenge of ensuring its system fairly recognises the accumulated wear of generations of industrial workers.
