The Municipal Education Council of Barcelona (CEMB) met on June 16 to address a crucial issue: the student reception model. The Education Councillor, Sara Belbeida, presided over the session, which took place in the City Hall's Salón de Crónicas at 17:00. This meeting is significant due to the increasing diversity in classrooms and the urgent need to implement inclusive strategies.

Notable interventions and anti-racist approach

During the meeting, several experts shared their perspectives on the current situation. Among them, Aida C. Rodríguez, assistant to the Ombudsman for the defence of children's rights, addressed the challenges faced by newly arrived students. Meanwhile, Jordi Collet, a sociology professor at the University of Vic, provided an analysis of internal segregation in educational centres from an anti-racist perspective.

The Director of Education and Territory of the Consortium of Education of Barcelona, Eulàlia Esclapés, also actively participated in the debate. Her intervention focused on accelerated reception classrooms, an essential resource to facilitate the rapid and effective integration of foreign students.

After the initial presentations, a participatory dynamic took place where attendees could work on concrete proposals related to the central theme. This collaborative approach aims not only to identify problems but also to generate practical solutions that benefit all students.

The discussion about the educational model in Barcelona is more relevant than ever. With a significant increase in the number of immigrant and refugee students, educational institutions must adapt to ensure equitable education. School segregation has been criticised for years, and such forums are fundamental to addressing these issues from multiple angles.

As we move towards a more inclusive future, initiatives like this are essential for building an educational system that reflects the cultural and social diversity present in our city. The commitment shown by key figures like Sara Belbeida and other experts is a positive step towards a fairer and more inclusive education.
