The Barcelona City Council has approved a significant renovation project for the Oriol Martorell Gardens, aiming to enhance urban connectivity and green space. With an investment of €8.7 million, the project will transform the area between Sarrià and Tres Torres over the next 18 months.
The City Council of Barcelona has taken a decisive step towards urban revitalization by approving an extensive renovation of the Oriol Martorell Gardens in the Sarrià – Sant Gervasi district. This initiative, which comes with a budget of €8.7 million, aims to create a new green space that will serve as a vital connector between the neighborhoods of Sarrià and Tres Torres.
Scheduled to commence in early 2027, this ambitious project is expected to span 18 months. The plan includes transforming existing urbanized areas into landscaped public spaces while enhancing accessibility for residents. According to Maria Eugènia Gay, the district’s councilor, this development represents a crucial shift from an underutilized area into a vibrant community hub.
“This project is a decisive step towards turning a border space into a meeting point that will connect Sarrià and Tres Torres,” said Gay. She emphasized that it would not only increase greenery but also improve community life and accessibility.
The new park will cover an impressive 5,844 m², designed as a communal area fostering connections among neighbors through improved pedestrian pathways and accessible routes. This aligns with Barcelona’s broader strategy to enhance urban living conditions amid ongoing climate challenges.
The design incorporates features such as accessible paths, resting areas, children’s play zones, and urban gardens, all adhering to municipal sustainability guidelines. Additionally, architectural elements will restore visual continuity with Via Augusta and neighboring buildings.
The gardens are set to include renewable energy generation systems while also addressing traffic flow on Via Augusta for enhanced pedestrian comfort.
This renovation is part of the Municipal Investment Plan for 2025-2027, which allocates over €1.9 billion citywide aimed at improving public spaces and housing access while tackling climate change impacts effectively. Specifically for Sarrià – Sant Gervasi, there is an earmarked investment of €100 million, which includes projects like the new library at Sarrià – J.V. Foix and street improvements along Balmes Street.
The transformation of Oriol Martorell Gardens reflects Barcelona’s commitment to creating more livable neighborhoods through strategic investments in infrastructure that prioritize community engagement and environmental sustainability.
Residents can expect construction updates as work begins next year; those interested in following progress can check local government announcements or visit their website for more details on upcoming community meetings regarding this project.
