A step towards the recovery of the Catalan coast

The Generalitat of Catalonia has taken an important step in the conservation of its natural environment by presenting the Strategic Plan for the Restoration of Marine Ecosystems (PEREMCAT). This innovative project aims to restore and preserve marine ecosystems along the entire Catalan coast, with an initial investment exceeding 3 million euros.

Since its launch, specialized teams have begun conducting diagnostics in various coastal areas, starting with the emblematic Costa Brava. Divers from the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB) are carrying out detailed inspections in places like Cala Bona, where an alarming decline of the endangered alga Ericaria crinita, which used to be abundant, has been detected. This situation highlights the urgent need to assess and act on the threats facing these habitats.

PEREMCAT will focus on four essential marine ecosystems: seagrass meadows, algae, rhodoliths, and coral reefs. According to Sergi Rasero, head of the Marine Protection and Conservation Service, these ecosystems are fundamental not only for local biodiversity but also for economic activities such as fishing. The initial phase of the plan will extend over more than a year and will seek to identify the areas most affected by factors such as climate change and human pressure.

This effort not only responds to local needs; it is also aligned with European objectives that require at least 30% of degraded habitats to be restored by 2030. In this sense, PEREMCAT aims to anticipate these demands through concrete actions that improve the overall state of the marine environment.

In addition to technical actions, the project includes educational initiatives to raise public awareness about the importance of conserving these ecosystems. Júlia Costa, coordinator of PEREMCAT, has emphasized that small everyday actions can make a big difference. For example, avoiding stepping on algae can significantly contribute to their preservation.

As the project progresses, it will be crucial to continuously monitor the threats to these ecosystems. PEREMCAT will not only provide a comprehensive assessment of the current state of the Catalan coast but will also establish clear priorities for future interventions. With this comprehensive strategy, Catalonia hopes to not only protect its natural heritage but also ensure a sustainable future for its marine resources.
