A rescue that unites the community
In a moving display of bravery and commitment to marine life, two young athletes and a Mossos d’Esquadra officer became heroes by rescuing two stranded bottlenose dolphins on Sant Pol beach in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. This incident occurred early in the morning when a passerby alerted emergency services about the critical situation of the cetaceans.
At 8 a.m., a woman walking on the beach spotted the dolphins struggling to return to the water and did not hesitate to call 112. The call was quickly answered, allowing a Mossos d’Esquadra patrol to arrive shortly after. Aware of the established protocol for such cases, the officer acted decisively and joined the young people to attempt to save the animals.
The rescue would not have been possible without the remote support of the Foundation for the Conservation and Recovery of Marine Animals (CRAM). From their headquarters, the technical team guided the rescuers on how to proceed. After assessing the physical condition of the dolphins through images sent by witnesses, CRAM authorised the attempt to reintroduce them to the water.
With precise instructions on how to correctly orient the cetaceans, the officer and the young people waded into the water. With great care, they managed to correct the position of both dolphins before giving them a gentle push towards the open sea. To everyone's relief and joy, both animals began to swim out to sea without apparent signs of illness; all indications were that they were simply disoriented.
This incident has highlighted not only individual courage but also the importance of teamwork between citizens and authorities in critical situations. The local council emphasised that the rescue was carried out “swiftly” and in accordance with all necessary protocols to ensure animal welfare. Such actions reinforce the community's commitment to protecting the environment and its inhabitants.
