This new legal scenario allows Oriol Junqueras to regain his civil and institutional rights and return to the political forefront. According to elCatalán.es, the leader of Esquerra Republicana plans to rejoin university teaching as a history professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
Organisationally, the party will activate the usual primary process to formally designate its candidate for the presidency of the Generalitat. ERC is currently the strongest ally of the socialist Salvador Illa.
Poll estimates reflect a positive trend for Esquerra ahead of the upcoming Catalan regional elections. Several surveys grant it between four and six more years of the twenty it currently has, surpassing Junts. Despite these favourable expectations, the immediate priority for the party is focused on the municipal elections officially scheduled for 23 May 2027.
In Barcelona, the party hopes to consolidate its growth options under the leadership of Elisenda Alamany in the Catalan capital. Regarding state politics, the republican leadership maintains its support for Gabriel Rufián as the lead candidate in Madrid for the general elections.
