The Mossos d'Esquadra have arrested thirteen people, one of whom is a minor, for public disorder following the housing protest. The incidents left 30 officers with minor injuries and continued until midnight in Plaza Catalunya.
The altercations began after the housing protest and moved to Plaza Catalunya, the endpoint for activists coming from the intersection of Paseo de Gràcia and Gran Via. According to the Mossos d'Esquadra, the violent actions remained active until midnight.
The provisional balance provided by the police force is thirteen arrests for public disorder, all adult men except for one minor girl. Additionally, 30 officers sustained minor injuries during the clashes.
The Mossos attribute the disturbances to violent groups of hooded individuals deployed in the Plaza Catalunya area, exhibiting very violent behaviour against the police line. They threw fire extinguishers, wooden and metal sticks, stones, cobblestones, knives, and glass bottles filled with liquid.
"Police interventions were carried out to make them leave the area, but the violent individuals continued to gather materials from nearby construction sites, launching mass amounts of stones at the officers"
The police force also reported the burning of construction materials on Calle Pelai and bicycles parked on public roads. During the incidents, 28 barricades and up to 22 fires were recorded, which were extinguished by the Bombers de Barcelona under a police protection operation to ensure a safe intervention at each point.
The Mossos claim that some of the hooded individuals who instigated the incidents used the camp in Plaza Catalunya to take refuge and escape from police action. The force states that they made selective use of launchers in response to the severity of the attacks and to restore order.
The events occurred on Monday night and affected residents and businesses in the city centre. The investigation remains open to identify more participants in the disturbances.
