Mossos arrest two men aged 28 and 19 for snatching a gold chain from a tourist on Hospital Street. The victims' smart glasses recorded the theft and allowed for their identification.
A couple of tourists strolling through the Raval on September 28 at 11:30 in the morning were victims of a violent robbery on Hospital Street. Two men snatched the gold chain worn by one of them, according to Mossos d'Esquadra.
Rather than staying still, the victims decided to chase the thieves. Technology played a decisive role here: the smart glasses worn by one of the tourists recorded the moment of the assault and the subsequent escape of the suspect through several streets in the neighbourhood. The footage also showed another man confronting them.
With this material, the victims soon went to the Ciutat Vella police station to file a report and hand over the recordings. Officers distributed the photos of the suspects among the district patrols and the plainclothes Mossos group.
The swift police action led to the arrest of the first suspect, aged 28, on the same day of the robbery at around 11:55, just twenty minutes after the incident. The second suspect, aged 19, was located around 20:40 by uniformed officers patrolling the area.
Both detainees have three previous convictions for similar offences, a profile that fits the repeat offending affecting the more touristy areas of Barcelona. The arrested individuals were placed at the disposal of the judiciary.
The case illustrates how a device intended for leisure ended up being a useful tool for investigation. For the residents of Raval, the arrest of two thieves with a criminal history reinforces surveillance in an area where robberies of chains and watches from tourists are common.
