The Banys del Fòrum area in Barcelona has reopened its doors following a significant renovation that prioritises safety, accessibility, and sustainability. This project, which began in September 2025, required an investment of €2.12 million, partly funded by the European Next Generation funds. The improvement of the space not only aims to provide a safer environment for users but also to enrich the local ecosystem and promote social inclusion.
Structural and environmental improvements
The works carried out have included the adaptation of infrastructures to resolve access and safety deficiencies. Among the most notable interventions are the demolition of the dam and the renewal of the underwater safety networks. Additionally, ramps have been implemented to facilitate access to the water, eliminating architectural barriers that limited the autonomy of people with reduced mobility.
The project has also placed a strong emphasis on the naturalisation of the space. Existing plants have been replaced with native species adapted to local saline and climatic conditions. Pangea Island, an artificial area within the complex, has been transformed into a refuge for seabirds such as the little ringed plover and the common tern, thereby contributing to increasing marine biodiversity.
Aside from the physical improvements, a Social Dynamisation Service has been established, which will offer socio-educational activities aimed at all audiences, especially vulnerable groups. Last summer, over 1,100 people participated in these initiatives that promote respect for the environment and encourage sports practices.
Moreover, there are plans to install a guingueta bar with an inclusive approach that will not allow the sale of alcohol or smoking on its terrace. This establishment will feature a sustainable system to reduce waste through a refundable deposit for each reusable cup used.
With all these improvements now operational, the Banys del Fòrum area positions itself as a key point for both citizens and tourists visiting Barcelona. The City Council, along with BCASA and local institutions, has worked hard to ensure that this space is not only attractive from a recreational perspective but also responsible from an environmental standpoint.
“Through the Sustainable Tourism Plan in Destination Barcelona, we seek to create inclusive spaces that benefit the entire community,” stated a municipal spokesperson during the inauguration.
As this project moves towards its definitive consolidation, it is expected to continue attracting visitors while promoting essential values such as social inclusion and respect for the environment.
