Former president Carles Puigdemont asserts that he is already preparing his return to Catalonia following the endorsement of the Constitutional Court for the Amnesty Law. He claims that the process is irreversible.

The former president of the Generalitat and leader of Junts, Carles Puigdemont, has taken a further step in his relationship with the return to Catalonia. According to Cadena SER, in an interview aired on La2 Cat, he states that he is already working on his return, something he had not articulated so clearly until now.

Puigdemont maintains that the situation has reached a point of no return following the endorsement of the Constitutional Court for the Amnesty Law. His words are as follows:

“It is irreversible and, therefore, they will have to end up signing the surrender. And it is true that now my mind has started to think that, indeed, the return must be prepared.”

The leader of Junts compares the current phase to the time he spent organising his exile, which he defines as chronic if necessary. Now, he explains, his priority is the return.

Regarding his departure from Spain after 1-O in 2017, Puigdemont denies that he fled or sought to hide. He asserts that he settled in Brussels because he wanted to be at the heart of Europe, and that if he had wanted to remain unnoticed, he would have chosen a country without an extradition treaty with Spain. He admits, however, that he exposed himself to possible extradition.

According to his own account, his presence in Brussels had a specific political objective: to raise awareness of the conflict between Catalonia and Spain and to seek political solutions from Europe. As a Catalan reader, it is worth remembering that the question of his return depends on the application of the amnesty in his case, something that has not yet occurred.

At that point, Puigdemont acknowledges that he came to think that the amnesty would never be applied to him, because, in his view, no one wanted his return. Nevertheless, he states that it has still not been applied to his situation and warns that:

“One can never rule out that they act as they have always acted, outside of all legal logic.”

For now, there is no date or deadline for the return. Any change will depend on whether the amnesty is ultimately applied to his case.
