The former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont is preparing his return to Spain once the Supreme Court finalises the amnesty. He states this in an interview with La2Cat.

Crónica Global reports on the statements made by Carles Puigdemont, who in an interview on the programme "Plano secuencia" of La2Cat claims he is already working on preparing his return. The leader of Junts, who has been in exile in Belgium since the unilateral declaration of independence on October 27, 2017, believes that the amnesty process is irreversible following the endorsement of the Constitutional Court of the law.

According to his words, the State will eventually recognise the situation: "It is irreversible and, therefore, they will have to end up signing the surrender." Puigdemont states that he has spent a lot of time preparing for his exile and is now working on the way back.

"I cannot stop. No one forced me to take this job. I did it assuming all the consequences and I must respond to this."

The former president does not regret what he did, although he admits that "maybe I would have done things differently." He also does not rule out repeating his decisions because, according to him, he has never stopped doing so. One of the uncertainties regarding his return is whether he will occupy the seat of deputy in the Parliament from the Junts list in the last regional elections.

Puigdemont rules out acting as the leader of the opposition against president Salvador Illa. He believes that a former president should not "control" his successor, "whoever it may be." He adds that the Catalonia he left in 2017 no longer "exists" and that upon his return, he wants to listen primarily to the new generations.

The leader of Junts also recounts his departure from Spain in 2017. He claims he fled sitting in the back seat of a car, dressed in a suit and tie, and spent the first night at the Hotel Chambord in Brussels. He denies having travelled in the boot.

In August 2024, on the day of Illa's investiture, he gave a speech in front of the Arc de Triomphe in Barcelona intending to enter the Parliament. According to his account, upon seeing the Parc de la Ciutadella heavily guarded by police, he chose to flee again. To check if he was being watched, he also arranged for his Belgian car to cross the border to his home in Sant Julià de Ramis, in Girona, without anyone stopping it.

Puigdemont also reveals that an envoy from the PSOE visited him three times after Pedro Sánchez's investiture in 2023. According to his account, he was offered a deal similar to the pardons, but he would only accept an amnesty. Finally, he denies that his mansion in Waterloo has been paid for with public money.
