The City Council of Barcelona has begun a €2 million renovation project at the former Santa Creu hospital, aiming to restore its facade and cloister by early 2027. This initiative is crucial for preserving the city's architectural heritage.

The historic Santa Creu hospital in Barcelona is undergoing significant renovations as the City Council embarks on a comprehensive restoration project. The works, which began recently, involve an investment of €2 million aimed at revitalizing both the facade and cloister of this iconic structure.

Located in the vibrant Raval neighborhood, the former hospital served as a medical facility from 1414 until its closure in 1926. The current renovations are not just about aesthetics; they are essential for ensuring the structural integrity and preservation of this important cultural landmark. Albert Batlle, the councilor for Ciutat Vella, emphasized that this project is vital for both heritage preservation and neighborhood revitalization.

The renovation of the cloister alone accounts for €1.3 million of the budget. This phase includes consolidating vaults and arches, cleaning stone surfaces, and renewing roofing materials to enhance stability. Approximately 2,400 square meters will be remodeled to restore its historical significance.

The initial steps have focused on protecting existing trees in Rubió i Lluch gardens while removing old pavements and non-original structures within the cloister area. Subsequent phases will involve reinforcing existing structures with traditional Catalan roofing techniques and synthetic waterproofing materials.

In addition to cloister repairs, approximately €700,000 has been allocated for restoring the main facade over an area of 1,089 square meters. This work includes cleaning and repairing architectural elements that have deteriorated over time. The process will begin with careful removal of damaged or non-original features followed by extensive cleaning efforts.

The overarching goal is to create a new focal point within Raval through these renovations. Batlle noted that this effort complements other ongoing projects in the area such as improvements to Doctor Fleming gardens and plans for renovating La Boqueria market.

The transformation aims to connect various public spaces around Santa Creu hospital with enhancements like a new passage linking internal gardens to Plaza de la Gardunya. This plaza itself will undergo significant upgrades including tree planting, new furniture installations, children’s play areas, and pavement changes across more than 4,600 square meters.

This ambitious plan aligns with broader urban renewal initiatives underway along La Rambla set to conclude by February 2027. The market’s renovation seeks to integrate it more closely with Raval through improved access points.

The city envisions these combined efforts as creating a cultural hub around Santa Creu hospital—a “cultural lung” featuring new public spaces and facilities including plans for a library expansion linked to Biblioteca de Catalunya.

This restoration project not only preserves an important piece of Barcelona’s history but also enhances community engagement by providing modern amenities alongside historical architecture. Residents can expect ongoing updates as these transformative works progress towards completion in early 2027.
