On July 16, firefighters from the Generalitat successfully stabilized a significant wildfire in Aiguamúrcia, marking the fifth incident in just one week. This latest fire broke out around 2 PM in the Camp Gran de la Quadra area and quickly spread across 1.5 hectares, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.
A total of 109 firefighters were deployed, utilizing 31 units, including 21 ground teams and 10 aerial units. The rapid spread of the flames was exacerbated by challenging terrain and strong winds coming from the sea, which pushed the fire northward towards local vineyards.
The fire had already traveled between 200 to 300 meters before containment efforts took effect. Fire officials noted that this incident follows a troubling pattern; within just eight days, there have been four separate wildfires and one reactivation in Aiguamúrcia, all of which are suspected to be deliberately set.
This alarming trend is underscored by statistics from Agents Rurals indicating that as of mid-2026, Catalonia has experienced a total of 461 wildfires, burning approximately 4,571 hectares. Among these incidents, at least 72 fires have been confirmed as intentional acts.
