The Germans Trias Hospital in Badalona has introduced a groundbreaking non-surgical method for treating non-melanoma skin cancers. This innovative technique offers patients a quick recovery without the need for hospitalization.

The Germans Trias Hospital, commonly known as Can Ruti, has made significant strides in dermatological care by implementing a novel non-invasive treatment for non-melanoma skin cancers. This approach allows patients to receive effective therapy without undergoing traditional surgical procedures.

Recently, the hospital treated its first batch of patients using this advanced technique, which involves applying a layer of radioactive resin containing reni-188 directly onto the cancerous lesion. This isotope emits radiation that penetrates and destroys malignant skin cells up to a depth of 3 millimeters. The application process is straightforward; the resin is left on the lesion for one to three hours before being removed, allowing patients to return home immediately without anesthesia or hospitalization.

This innovative treatment targets individuals diagnosed with various forms of non-melanoma skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. It is particularly beneficial for those whose tumors or overall health make them unsuitable candidates for conventional therapies like surgery.

Patients eligible for this cutting-edge treatment are evaluated by a multidisciplinary committee specializing in non-melanoma skin cancer. The procedure is conducted collaboratively by experts from both Dermatology and Nuclear Medicine departments within the hospital’s facilities. Following the procedure, dermatologists continue to monitor patient progress through outpatient follow-ups.

Clinical studies have shown that this technique boasts an impressive efficacy rate exceeding 95%. According to Percy Hinojosa, an associate at the Nuclear Medicine department, “in many cases, just one session of resin application is sufficient to eradicate the tumor.” He further noted that patient satisfaction levels are notably high due to the ease of application and favorable aesthetic outcomes—no scarring or marks are left behind.

Júlia Verdaguer, an associate in Dermatology at Can Ruti, emphasized that this treatment serves as an alternative to surgery, especially for complex lesions that may require aggressive or disfiguring surgical interventions. This is particularly crucial for patients with existing health conditions that complicate surgical options. Verdaguer pointed out that it is especially advantageous when lesions occur in sensitive areas such as lips, ears, or noses where cosmetic impact can be significant.

The rise in skin cancer cases underscores the importance of such advancements in medical technology. In Spain alone, over 78,000 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed annually—a figure expected to increase as populations age and sun exposure accumulates over time. Non-melanoma types account for more than 90% of all skin cancer diagnoses and their incidence rises sharply after age 45.

The primary risk factor remains prolonged sun exposure throughout one’s life; hence these cancers are most frequently found on sun-exposed areas like the face and neck. As awareness grows about preventive measures against UV exposure, innovations like those at Can Ruti offer hope not only for effective treatment but also improved quality of life post-diagnosis.

This pioneering approach at Can Ruti represents a significant leap forward in dermatological care and highlights ongoing efforts within healthcare systems to provide less invasive yet highly effective treatments. Patients interested in exploring this option should consult their healthcare providers regarding eligibility criteria and potential next steps toward receiving care.
