The reconstruction of Badalona's Pont del Petroli is nearing completion, with plans to reopen the landmark by December. The project faced delays due to complex maritime work.
The long-awaited reopening of the Pont del Petroli in Badalona is on track for late December, following extensive reconstruction efforts that have been underway for several months. Originally scheduled for autumn, the timeline has been adjusted due to challenges encountered during the installation of new pilings in the sea.
During a recent site visit, Xavier Garcia Albiol, the mayor of Badalona, expressed optimism about the progress being made. “If everything goes according to plan, we expect to inaugurate the new Pont del Petroli by the end of this year,” he stated. The focus now is on completing the structural work before moving on to urbanization and finishing touches.
Currently, workers are replacing sections of the walkway that were damaged during severe storms. This phase is expected to wrap up within days. The most intricate part of this project involves constructing a new final platform designed with enhanced hydrodynamic features for increased resilience against future maritime tempests.
This platform will measure 13 meters in diameter and include a central hole measuring 4.20 meters. Once completed at the port of Badalona, it will be transported by sea and installed at the end of the pier. This critical step will provide a stable base for further construction activities without being as affected by ocean conditions.
The final stages will involve protective measures such as painting and renewing wooden flooring, railings, and lighting fixtures. Project engineer Manuel Reventós emphasized that they are currently addressing “the most critical part” aimed at reinforcing the pier’s structure against future storms.
The reconstruction effort is co-financed by both Badalona City Council and Barcelona Metropolitan Area authorities. This initiative aims not only to restore but also enhance one of Badalona’s most recognizable coastal landmarks that had been closed due to significant storm damage.
The Pont del Petroli has historically served as a vital connection between land and sea for locals and tourists alike since its initial construction in 2001. Its reopening is anticipated not just as a restoration but also as an opportunity for revitalizing local tourism and community engagement along Badalona’s waterfront.
