A sudden downpour in Olivella led to the tragic death of a British resident whose car was engulfed by floodwaters. Emergency services responded quickly but were unable to save him.

In a devastating incident in Olivella, a British man lost his life after his vehicle was swept away by torrential rain that hit the region overnight. The victim, who lived in the Las Colinas urbanization, was driving alone when he encountered the rapidly rising waters of the Begues stream.

The local mayor, Marta Verdejo, confirmed that emergency services were alerted shortly after 11 PM on September 16 when a witness reported seeing a car fall into the water. This prompted an immediate response from the Bombers de la Generalitat, who deployed eleven units along with drones and specialized aquatic rescue teams from the Grup d’Actuacions Especials (GRAE).

Despite their swift action, it wasn’t until around 2:25 AM that rescuers located the man’s body approximately 500 meters downstream from where his car had been submerged. The search efforts were complicated by strong currents and debris but ultimately led to finding him among bushes near an accessible area.

This tragic event highlights ongoing concerns about urban flooding in regions prone to heavy rainfall. Historical data shows that similar incidents have occurred previously; for instance, in October 2019, severe storms resulted in multiple fatalities across Catalonia due to flash floods.

The local community is now grappling with the aftermath of this tragedy while officials assess infrastructure vulnerabilities that may have contributed to such dangerous conditions. Mayor Verdejo expressed her condolences and emphasized the need for improved flood management systems to prevent future occurrences.

Residents are advised to stay vigilant during adverse weather conditions and report any flooding or emergencies immediately. Local authorities are working on enhancing drainage systems and conducting public awareness campaigns regarding safety measures during heavy rains.
