A routine inspection led to the discovery of over 60 kilos of marijuana concealed within second-hand appliances in La Jonquera. The truck driver has been arrested and faces serious charges.
During a targeted operation, the National Police intercepted a truck on the AP-7 highway carrying a staggering 60.13 kilograms of marijuana cleverly hidden among second-hand household appliances. This significant bust occurred near La Jonquera, a known transit point for illicit goods heading into Europe.
The operation was part of an extensive investigation by the Drug Trafficking Unit based in Elche, which had been monitoring drug transport routes for several months. Officers stopped the vehicle at a service area and conducted a thorough inspection of its cargo.
Upon examining four pallets loaded with various used appliances, police discovered 48 vacuum-sealed packages containing the illegal substance nestled between items like refrigerators and washing machines. This method of concealment highlights the lengths traffickers will go to evade law enforcement.
The driver, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was promptly arrested on charges related to public health violations and is now awaiting judicial proceedings. Such operations are crucial as they disrupt trafficking networks that span across Europe.
This incident is reminiscent of previous cases where drug traffickers have utilized similar tactics to transport narcotics undetected. For instance, in 2021, authorities uncovered over 100 kilos of cocaine hidden in shipments labeled as legitimate goods destined for various European markets.
The ongoing collaboration between local police forces and national agencies underscores a concerted effort to combat drug trafficking effectively. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to delve deeper into this case to uncover any potential accomplices or larger networks involved.
Residents and travelers using the AP-7 should remain vigilant about suspicious activities around service areas. The police encourage anyone with information regarding drug trafficking or suspicious vehicles to report it immediately.
