The commercial confidence index in Barcelona has hit its highest score since the pandemic, reflecting a cautious optimism among local businesses. Despite improvements, many merchants still express concerns about current conditions.

Barcelona’s latest commercial confidence index (ICS) has shown significant improvement, reaching a score of 8.8, the highest since the onset of the pandemic in 2020. This increase of over two points from last year indicates a shift towards optimism among local merchants, even as many continue to grapple with challenging business conditions. The ICS is calculated based on responses from merchants regarding their current situation and future expectations, revealing a complex landscape for commerce in the city.

Despite this positive trend, the current situation index remains negative at -9.8, although it has improved by five points since 2020. This suggests that while there is hope for recovery, many businesses still do not view their immediate circumstances favorably.

“The majority of merchants consider that their current business situation is still not good,”

noted municipal sources.

The survey results indicate that sectors such as automotive and personal equipment are faring better than others like leisure and culture, which have lower confidence scores. For instance, automotive scored an impressive 25.9 while leisure and culture languished at just 3.7.

This mixed bag of results highlights a broader trend where certain industries are rebounding faster than others. Historical data shows that during previous economic recoveries in Barcelona, sectors like retail often lagged behind more dynamic industries such as technology and services.

Raquel Gil, Deputy Mayor for Economic Promotion, expressed her satisfaction with the ICS recovery:

“This is good news that shows commerce is a competitive sector capable of combining tradition with innovation.”

She emphasized that this resilience is crucial for sustaining employment and contributing to local GDP—currently estimated at around 13.2%.

The report also revealed that Barcelona boasts approximately 61,875 active establishments, including retail and service businesses—a testament to its vibrant commercial landscape despite ongoing challenges.

The city’s commercial utilization rate stands at 90.9%, indicating only nine out of every hundred businesses have closed down recently. This statistic underscores the stability within the sector amidst fluctuating consumer behaviors post-pandemic.

Looking ahead, expectations remain cautiously optimistic across various sectors; food services and automotive show particularly high future outlooks above 30 on the expectation scale. However, most other sectors still reflect negative sentiments about their current situations.

The municipal report draws from over 1,200 surveys, establishing a balance between favorable and unfavorable responses to gauge overall sentiment accurately. As such data continues to be collected regularly by city officials, it serves as an essential indicator for potential investors looking into Barcelona’s commercial viability.

For those interested in exploring Barcelona’s diverse shopping options or investing in local businesses, now may be an opportune time given these encouraging trends—especially in thriving sectors like food and automotive.
