A New Approach to Food Security
In a context of increasing geopolitical instability, food has been elevated to the status of critical infrastructure in Europe, comparable to sectors such as energy and defence. This paradigm shift is detailed in the Agro-Food Trends Report 2025/26, recently presented in Lleida by H/Advisors and the INTEC Foundation.
The report, which spans 183 pages, highlights how the agro-food sector is undergoing a structural transformation driven by geopolitical tensions, climate issues, and technological advancements. According to Clara Aguilera, senior advisor at H/Advisors and former European parliamentarian, it is essential for Europe to develop its food autonomy to face current challenges. “Food sovereignty is more relevant than ever,” Aguilera states.
The study underscores that sovereignty over key inputs such as fertilisers and energy must be a priority to ensure sustainable production. The transition towards a 5.0 productive model involves the use of artificial intelligence and autonomous robotics to optimise agricultural processes. Additionally, a shift from the “Just-in-Time” model to a “Just-in-Case” approach is anticipated, which implies maintaining larger reserves and redundancies in the face of potential crises.
Regulatory pressure also plays a crucial role in this evolution. With initiatives such as the European Green Deal, companies must adapt to new sustainability demands that increase operational costs. Francisco Delgado, vice president of the INTEC Foundation, emphasises that these mandatory conditions are necessary to ensure a resilient future in the agro-food sector.
The report concludes that the agro-food chain is evolving towards integrated smart systems where data connects all links: production, industry, logistics, and consumer. This interconnection not only improves efficiency but also strengthens supply security in an increasingly volatile environment.
During the report's presentation at the Parc Agrobiotech in Lleida, several experts shared their perspectives on these significant changes. Among them were Jordi Montaña from the Vall Companys group and Roberto García from the University of Lleida. The event was concluded by Miquel Sàmper, conseller de Empresa i Treball.
