At an event held in Barcelona, students from the 2024-2026 cohort of the Municipal School of Second Chances (EM2O) were recognised for their effort and dedication. The second deputy mayor, Maria Eugènia Gay, and the councillor for Education, Sara Belbeida, presented diplomas to the students who have completed their training at this institution created to help young people who have left the education system. This event not only celebrates their academic achievements but also highlights the positive impact of the programme on the lives of these young people.
Highlighted Results of the Programme
Since its establishment in 2019, the EM2O has achieved that 80% of its students return to the education system and continue with a professional career. This figure is a testament to the centre's commitment to providing educational alternatives to those facing difficulties. According to Belbeida, “Barcelona is a city that offers future options to every young person,” which is reflected in the opportunities provided by this school.
The evaluation conducted over the seven years of EM2O's operation reveals significant data about the educational trajectories of its students. Among them, it stands out that 38.5% opt for intermediate vocational training and 22% choose training and integration programmes. Additionally, smaller percentages correspond to professional certificates and higher-level vocational training.
Apart from returning to the education system, another relevant fact is that 65% of the students continue studying after completing their pathway at the EM2O. This follow-up demonstrates how the support received during their time at the school has a lasting effect on their lives. The methodology used combines practical activities with theoretical content tailored to individual needs, which has been positively valued by the students.
Sara Belbeida highlighted: “The work done by all the teachers has been fundamental in supporting these young people.”
The students have rated their experience with a high average score: 8.4 out of 10. Elements such as coordination with other training centres and individualised tutorial support received even higher scores; 9.2 out of 10, indicating strong emotional and academic support during their training process.
Through the testimonies collected in this evaluation, it is evident how many young people face significant challenges when returning to the educational sphere after being disconnected. However, thanks to the support received at the EM2O, many have been able to rediscover their vocations and gain the confidence to continue their educational trajectories with autonomy.
As this innovative programme progresses within the Barcelona education system, it is clear that initiatives like the EM2O are crucial for providing second chances to those who need them most. With a student-centred approach and a solid network of emotional and academic support, this model is consolidating itself as a benchmark for other educational institutions.
As these positive results are evaluated and individual achievements within the EM2O programme are celebrated, it is clear that there is much work to be done to continue supporting vulnerable young people. The ongoing commitment of both the local government and the teaching staff will be essential to maintain this momentum and ensure that every young person has access to the necessary tools to build a successful future.
