The construction of a new primary care center in Sant Boi de Llobregat has officially commenced, marking a significant development for the city’s healthcare infrastructure. The Departament de Salut of the Generalitat de Catalunya is investing approximately 12 million euros into this project, which is expected to be operational by mid-2028. This initiative aims to address the growing population’s healthcare needs and alleviate pressure on existing facilities.
Investment and Impact on Local Healthcare
The new center, located in the Marianao neighborhood, will span 3,455 square meters across four floors. It is designed to provide ample natural light and a welcoming environment for patients. According to Anna García-Altés, manager of the Barcelona Metropolitana Sur health region, «this CAP reinforces our commitment to robust and accessible primary care, which is fundamental to our health system.» The facility will not only enhance service delivery but also create a new Basic Health Area—ABS Sant Boi 5—along with a dedicated team of healthcare professionals.
This project comes at a crucial time as local authorities have noted an increase in demand for healthcare services. Mayor Lluïsa Moret expressed her enthusiasm about the new center, stating that it will significantly improve primary care quality and offer a wide range of services tailored to community needs. She emphasized that this facility would serve many residents from Marianao, one of the most densely populated areas in Sant Boi.
The construction phase is projected to last around 18 months, following an earlier contract award worth 8.2 million euros. The Generalitat’s upcoming budget includes an additional allocation of 3.6 million euros specifically for this CAP, alongside funding for other health centers in nearby Gavà and Castelldefels.
A notable feature of the new center will be its integration with mental health services. The facility will house the Centro de Salud Mental Infanto Juvenil (CSMIJ), relocating from its current site to better serve local families. Additionally, it will introduce a day hospital for child and adolescent mental health—a first for Sant Boi—aimed at reducing travel burdens for families currently seeking care in Gavà.
This comprehensive approach reflects broader efforts by local government officials to enhance public health resources amid rising demands due to population growth. As Moret concluded: «These developments are essential steps toward meeting basic community needs and improving daily life for our citizens.» With these advancements underway, residents can look forward to improved access and quality of healthcare services in their area.
The design of the new CAP emphasizes sustainability with energy-efficient systems that promote alternative energy use. This aligns with contemporary architectural trends focused on creating environmentally friendly public buildings that prioritize patient comfort while minimizing ecological impact.
The establishment of this fifth primary care center signifies not just an investment in physical infrastructure but also a commitment to enhancing overall community well-being through improved access to essential health services.
