The construction of the new Cal Maiol School Institute has begun in Barcelona, marking an important milestone for education in the Sants-Montjuïc district. This project, which represents an investment of €13.6 million, will transform the current school into a school institute and is expected to be operational for the start of the school year in September 2028.
Details of the Educational Project
The new facility will be partially located in an old building of an electrical substation within the Can Batlló site, which will be rehabilitated. In addition, a new three-storey building will be constructed to house spaces for early childhood and primary education, as well as administrative areas and services such as the kitchen and dining room.
The design also includes large outdoor spaces of over 2,000 m², which will be naturalised to integrate the urban park of Can Batlló with the school. This will not only enhance the educational experience but also promote interaction with the local community.
The second building will be the old block 19, which will also have three floors and will accommodate facilities for secondary education, including a gym and a library. Both buildings will be interconnected by a large porch, creating a functional architectural complex of 5,859 m².
This new infrastructure is expected to significantly expand the public educational offer in the area. The Cal Maiol School Institute will not only provide more places for early childhood and primary education but will also create new opportunities for secondary students.
“The creation of the Cal Maiol School Institute is essential to meet the educational needs of the neighbourhood,” stated a municipal spokesperson during the project's presentation.
This development is part of a broader strategy to consolidate Can Batlló as an important community and educational centre in Barcelona. The integration of accessible and functional spaces reflects a commitment to inclusive education tailored to current demands.
As construction progresses, this new institute is expected to benefit not only current students but also future generations, contributing to the social and educational development of the district.
