A new educational approach in Reus
The Gaudí Institute in Reus has taken a bold step by announcing the implementation of a vocational training cycle in funeral services, which will begin next academic year. This initiative, developed in collaboration with FuneCamp, aims to address the growing demand for qualified professionals in a sector that, although often overlooked, plays a crucial role in difficult times for families.
This innovative programme will offer 30 places and will consist of 2,000 hours of dual training, which will include internships in the public joint company. Students will have the opportunity to learn about various aspects of the funeral sector, including protocol and funeral ceremonies, as well as thanatopraxy and operations in crematoria.
José Álvarez, manager of FuneCamp, has emphasised the importance of this training by pointing out that the funeral sector has a “commitment to training” from companies in response to the growing professional demand. According to Álvarez, this cycle is not only necessary to ensure generational change within the public funeral sector but also represents an “important step” towards the evolution of the service as essential for the community.
Francesc Roca, Secretary of Vocational Training, has described this cycle as part of a “strategic sector,” highlighting that it will also be implemented in Terrassa in addition to Reus. This programme is considered a pilot test with a view to possible expansion to other Catalan municipalities.
Sandra Guaita, mayor of Reus, has emphasised the emotional relevance of providing funeral services. In her words: “They are provided at a very specific vital moment,” which requires special and human attention towards the affected families. The mayor has highlighted that having well-trained professionals is essential to ensure a dignified and respectful experience during these difficult times.
As this unique educational initiative progresses, it is expected to not only improve standards within the funeral sector but also to raise awareness in society about its importance. Proper training can make a significant difference in how funeral services are managed and how families are supported during their most vulnerable moments.
