An innovative initiative to promote recycling
The City Council of Girona has launched a pioneering measure aimed at encouraging recycling among its citizens. From now on, residents who use the smart bins at least once a week will enjoy a reduction in their waste fee. This strategy aims not only to decrease the amount of litter scattered around the bins but also to promote more sustainable behaviour among the population.
According to data provided by the Council, approximately 74.5% of households in Girona already regularly use the selective collection system, which includes both smart bins and temporary areas as well as the door-to-door service. Councillor Sílvia Aliu has highlighted that this figure reflects a significant commitment to more responsible and ecological waste management.
To qualify for this reduction, households must have deposited their waste in the smart bins at least 24 times during the semester, which is roughly once a week. In total, it is estimated that 35,550 households meet this criterion, mostly those residing in flats with areas between 70 and 135 square metres.
However, there is a considerable group of citizens —around 12,178 households, or one in four— who have yet to adopt this sustainable habit. Councillor Aliu has expressed her hope that this new measure will motivate these residents to actively participate in selective collection.
The implementation of this differentiated fee not only has positive environmental implications; it also represents significant cost savings for waste treatment. Currently, Girona has an overall recycling rate of 60%, a percentage expected to increase thanks to these initiatives.
Not only households will benefit; businesses involved in food service and distribution will also receive incentives. This year, a 75%% discount on the fee has been established for those commercial activities that collaborate with non-profit entities to reduce food waste.
Through these innovative and proactive measures, Girona is taking firm steps towards a more sustainable future. The combination of citizen commitment and effective public policies can significantly transform waste management in the city.
