A Boost to Railway Training in Catalonia
The Escola de Sobreestants in Tàrrega is preparing to take a significant step in the educational and professional field with the introduction of a specialization in railway infrastructure. This new programme, which will begin next academic year, is driven by the Departament de Territori and aims to train experts in a key sector for the future of public transport in Catalonia.
The agreement signed between the school and Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) establishes the foundations for a dual training system that will allow students to undertake practical placements within the public company. According to Jordi Terrades, Secretary General of the Departament, this initiative aims to ensure that qualified personnel are available to manage the Lleida Cercanías service in Terrassa, scheduled for 2027.
This training programme will not only focus on the maintenance and management of railway infrastructure but will also cover areas such as telecommunications, security systems, and electronic engineering. The future inclusion of training for train drivers reflects the educational centre's commitment to a comprehensive education tailored to the current demands of the sector.
In addition to the development in Tàrrega, a significant expansion is planned at three additional institutes located in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Mollet, and Barcelona. This expansion will triple the available places compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 305 places. This increase is crucial for reinforcing railway education and ensuring a steady flow of qualified talent.
Carles Ruiz, President of FGC, has emphasized that these programmes are essential to respond to the changing demands of the labour market. The collaboration between FGC and the Escola not only aims to train competent professionals but also to ensure an effective generational shift within the railway sector.
The new curriculum will include fundamental competencies such as planning, design, and management of projects related to civil works. With a modern methodological approach that incorporates digital tools, students will be better prepared to face the challenges of the contemporary railway field.
