A new boost for Catalan municipalities
Last Tuesday, Santa Coloma de Gramenet stood out as a model to follow at the technical day of the Pla de Barris and Viles of Catalonia, organised by the Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition. This event brought together 106 municipalities looking to present innovative projects in the second call for funding of the programme.
With an initial allocation of 200 million euros, expandable according to needs, the Catalan Government will open the application period on 6 July. During the day, guidance was provided on how to prepare the Programes Memòria d’Intervenció Integral (PMII), essential documents for accessing these grants.
The highlighted cases during the session included the projects implemented in Santa Coloma and Amposta, which were selected in the first call of the programme. These examples served as a reference for other councils aspiring to obtain funding in this new phase. Government representatives explained in detail the necessary criteria for processing and content required in the PMII.
Throughout the day, various proposals related to key areas such as employment, education, culture, and mobility were discussed. The rehabilitation of housing and ecological transition also occupied a central place in the discussions. In the afternoon, community entities and third sector organisations actively participated in debates on possible actions that could be integrated into municipal projects.
The Pla de Barris i Viles aims primarily to reduce existing social and territorial inequalities in Catalonia. It seeks to improve the living conditions of residents and strengthen community cohesion through specific interventions aimed at Areas of Special Attention.
Projections indicate that this programme will allow for the development of up to 120 transformative projects between 2025 and 2029, with a total estimated investment of 1.6 billion euros, coming from both the Government and the involved municipalities. So far, the first call has greenlit 20 projects that will benefit approximately 273,000 people.
