A New Era for the Barri Vell Campus
The University of Girona (UdG) has made a groundbreaking decision that promises to transform the educational landscape in the city's old town. In an announcement made by the rector Josep Calbó, the purchase of a parcel from the historic Butinyanes convent was confirmed, a measure aimed at alleviating the overcrowding of the Barri Vell campus, where various faculties such as Humanities, Education, and Psychology are located.
The transaction, which will take place in the coming days for a total amount of 2.2 million euros, includes eight currently unoccupied buildings that total approximately 3,300 square meters. This area is located at numbers 9 and 11 on Alemanys Street, an emblematic area that will now see its educational function revitalised.
Rector Calbó described this acquisition as a “strategic opportunity” for the growth of the campus. With this purchase, the UdG aims not only to relieve the current facilities but also to create new spaces dedicated to administrative services and research areas. The need is urgent; according to Calbó, “there is no other way to grow” this campus without this intervention.
As this project progresses, the adaptation works will be carried out in several phases. The university will start with those buildings that are in the best condition to be used as soon as possible. This approach will allow for the efficient use of the new space while preserving the historical integrity of the convent.
The integration of the convent into the campus will not only benefit current students and professors; it also represents an investment in Girona's educational future. By offering more space and resources, the UdG hopes to attract more students and foster a more dynamic and innovative academic environment.
