According to the Catalan Association of Environmental Health Companies (ADEPAP), this trend highlights the challenges posed by rising temperatures and urban environments.
ADEPAP’s recent report indicates that while cockroaches have become a pressing issue, rat populations have not increased compared to previous years. Instead, they have remained at consistent levels. This stability can be attributed to their established presence within urban sewer systems and underground areas, which allows them to thrive even during hot weather.
The report also noted an unexpected decline in the population of tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus) this season. Initially anticipated to proliferate due to warm conditions, their numbers fell short due to extreme heat and a lack of stagnant water necessary for breeding. This is a notable shift from previous summers when mosquito outbreaks were common.
Andreu Garcia, ADEPAP’s vice president and spokesperson, emphasized the importance of vigilance as autumn approaches. He stated, “We must not let our guard down; if high temperatures persist along with rainfall, we could see new mosquito hatchings that extend their presence into the coming weeks.” This warning serves as a reminder of how quickly pest dynamics can change with shifting weather patterns.
The current situation reflects broader trends observed over recent years regarding urban pests. For instance, historical data shows that during similar heatwaves in 2019, there was also a marked increase in cockroach sightings across major cities like Barcelona and Valencia.
