Cornellà de Llobregat has undergone a remarkable transformation in its urban environment thanks to the Cornellà Natura project, led by Mayor Antonio Balmón. In the last decade, the city has added 960 new trees and 68,568 shrubs, which has allowed for a 15% increase in green space. This change not only beautifies the landscape but also contributes to improving the quality of life for its residents.
A focus on a greener future
The City Council has made a positive assessment of the progress achieved during this period. 33 transformations have been carried out in public spaces and 19 actions of renaturalisation, creating green axes that connect parks and neighbourhoods. Additionally, over 17,000 square metres have been gained for pedestrians and 7.3 kilometres of bike lanes have been established.
Through the Cornellà Natura project, the Council aims to reduce the climate footprint and promote efficient consumption. It also seeks to increase urban greenery and encourage sustainable mobility that benefits both the environment and public health.
It's not just about aesthetics; the changes have had significant repercussions on the mental and physical health of citizens. According to data provided by the City Council, nitrogen dioxide emissions have decreased by 14%, while PM10 particles have reduced by 1.8%. These advances are correlated with a -10% decrease in cardiovascular diseases among residents.
There is no doubt that these green spaces are improving our quality of life,” said Balmón during a recent press conference.
Aside from the physical impact, there has also been a -15.3% reduction in depressive disorders and an astonishing -30% in cases of anxiety. These figures reflect how access to green areas can positively influence emotional well-being.
