A significant advance in surgical training
The Centre for Applied Biomedical Experimental Research (CREBA) in Torrelameu, Lleida, has taken a step forward in medical education by conducting a unique training course in robotic surgery using pigs as a model. This week, surgeons from various parts of the country have had the opportunity to practice advanced techniques with the Da Vinci robot, a system that simulates the real surgical experience.
Dr. Jaume Pelegrí, coordinator of the Clínic de Lleida and Minova Aliança, has highlighted that this is the first time this type of intervention has been carried out in Lleida. The use of the robot allows surgeons to operate as if they were inside the human body, thanks to its remote controls that translate manual movements into precise actions within the patient. This not only improves visual quality during operations—with 3D and enlarged images—but also optimises surgical outcomes.
Unlike previous courses that were limited to accredited surgeons, this training has opened its doors to students without prior qualifications. This change is significant as there is a shortage of centres in Spain capable of offering this type of training; until now, many aspiring surgeons were forced to travel abroad to acquire these skills.
The benefits of the Da Vinci system are evident: less bleeding during operations and a quicker recovery for patients. Furthermore, Dr. Manuel Gutiérrez, one of the participants from Seville, has emphasised how operating from a console reduces physical fatigue and improves focus during long interventions.
The training week not only covered Urology; it also included sessions on abdominal surgery led by Dr. Villalobos. With a waiting list already open for future courses scheduled for later this year, CREBA aims to consolidate its position as an internationally recognised centre for training highly qualified surgeons.
