Transformation of the Port of Barcelona
The Port of Barcelona is about to embark on a significant transformation that promises to revolutionise logistics and traffic in the area. Although construction will not begin until next year, the port authority has already taken the first steps towards creating a major road hub that will connect directly with the port facilities, expected to be operational by 2032.
The project includes the construction of an elevated roundabout over the former mouth of the Llobregat River, designed to facilitate vehicle and rail flow. This new access will be crucial for managing the increasing traffic of containers and goods arriving at the port. With an estimated budget of 98 million euros, the port's board of directors has approved its tender, although it still requires validation from the Council of Ministers.
The roundabout will feature three branches that will efficiently distribute traffic. The first will connect to a future motorway being planned by the Ministry of Transport, while the second branch will be designated to divert heavy traffic towards the busiest terminals in the south, including a new Catalunya dock. The third branch will temporarily direct traffic towards the northern terminals until a final elevated viaduct is completed.
In addition to the road access, contracts have also been awarded to construct three new berthing points on the east side of the Energy dock. These facilities are designed to improve the loading and unloading of liquid bulk, with a total estimated cost of 111.5 million euros. These new points are expected to significantly increase the operational capacity of the port and facilitate the movement towards sustainable fuels.
As these projects develop, Barcelona positions itself as a leader in modern port infrastructure. The combination of road and rail access will not only improve logistical efficiency but also contribute to a more sustainable model by prioritising less polluting fuels. With these initiatives, Barcelona aims not only to optimise its operational capacity but also to adapt to current environmental demands.
