In a significant shift for public transportation, users of intercity buses in Catalonia will soon be required to validate their tickets upon exiting the vehicle. This new measure, announced by Manuel Valdés, the General Director of the Autoritat del Transport Metropolità (ATM), is designed to gather detailed data on passenger movements and improve service efficiency.
Enhancing data collection for better service
The upcoming requirement mirrors existing practices on Ferrocarrils and Rodalies services. By mandating validation both at entry and exit points, authorities aim to collect anonymous data regarding when and where passengers board and alight from buses. This information will enable transport planners to adjust services according to actual demand patterns.
Valdés explained that while current systems provide insights into where journeys begin, they often lack clarity on where they end. The introduction of exit validators on intercity buses will fill this gap, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of travel patterns beyond the metropolitan area’s first crown.
As part of this initiative, there are plans to install these validators across various routes that extend beyond Barcelona’s immediate vicinity. However, Valdés emphasized that implementation timelines remain uncertain until the T-mobilitat system is fully operational throughout Catalonia.
The new validation process is also expected to pave the way for a revised fare model based on actual distances traveled rather than fixed zones. This change aims to eliminate abrupt price increases between nearby towns and create a more equitable pricing structure linked directly to journey lengths.
The ATM has been working towards integrating public transport systems across Catalonia since its inception three decades ago. Currently, it oversees approximately 75% of the region’s population and accounts for 97% of public transport journeys. The ongoing challenge involves harmonizing fare structures among various operators while advancing technological integration through T-mobilitat.
The goal is for individuals to consult multiple transportation options through a single application for planning, reserving, and paying for multimodal trips.
T-mobilitat represents a significant evolution from traditional magnetic card systems by enabling real-time data collection about travel patterns. The ultimate vision is an integrated mobility platform (PIM) that consolidates all forms of transport—trains, buses, metros, trams, shared bicycles, car-sharing services, taxis—into one cohesive application.
This platform will allow users not only to plan their journeys but also reserve and pay for them seamlessly across different modes of transportation. Currently underway is the integration of various operators’ ticketing systems into T-mobilitat’s framework with an emphasis on including intercity bus services as well.
The Centre de Gestió de la Informació de la Mobilitat (CGIM) plays a crucial role in coordinating information across different transport operators in Catalonia since its establishment in 2021. It aims to ensure reliable access to comprehensive network data while enhancing collaboration between operators and government agencies.
Additionally, improvements in bus operations depend heavily on the Sistema de Ayuda a la Explotación (SAE), which has been updated across hundreds of vehicles since 2022. Future enhancements include creating an overarching SAE system that visualizes all fleets regardless of operator affiliation—allowing teams more time for analysis rather than data collection.
This initiative marks a pivotal moment in transforming public transportation within Catalonia by leveraging technology and data analytics to meet evolving commuter needs effectively.
