Night incident affects thousands of travellers
The tranquility of the start of the Second Easter bridge was abruptly interrupted this morning in Catalonia, when a cable theft caused significant delays on the R2 north and R11 Rodalíes lines. The incident, which was detected around 02:30 hours, took place between the Granollers Centre and Cardedeu stations, generating delays of up to half an hour for passengers.
This incident not only affected train users but also coincided with a day marked by an intense exodus. According to the Servei Català de Trànsit, it was expected that around 600,000 vehicles would leave the metropolitan area of Barcelona between Friday and this Saturday, which had already begun to generate significant traffic jams on the main Catalan roads.
The most notable queues were recorded on the AP-7, where up to eight kilometres of congestion were reported between Mollet del Vallès and Granollers heading towards Girona. Additionally, other roads such as the C-17 also experienced difficulties due to the increase in traffic. In the province of Girona, the C-25 showed similar signs with delays towards the beaches.
In light of this chaotic situation, the Mossos d’Esquadra have intensified their efforts to ensure that drivers comply with traffic regulations. During this holiday weekend, more than 1,000 checks will be carried out by both uniformed and undercover patrols. The aim is to ensure that speed limits are adhered to and that safety is not compromised, especially for motorcyclists.
As the day progresses, it is likely that these measures will help mitigate some traffic problems; however, the night-time theft has made it clear how a single incident can trigger a series of logistical complications during one of the busiest weekends of the year.
