A record of road safety during Holy Week
This year's Holy Week has been a time of celebration and reflection for many, but also a critical period in terms of mobility. In Catalonia, traffic has increased by 6% compared to previous years, which could have led to greater concerns about road safety. However, the data has revealed encouraging news: no fatal accidents were recorded between Friday, March 27, and Monday, April 6.
According to the Catalan Traffic Service, during the return operation, up to 590,000 vehicles were counted on interurban roads between Sunday and Monday. Despite the high volume of traffic, the absence of fatal incidents is a significant achievement that highlights the commitment to road safety in the region.
Apart from the increase in mobility, another factor that contributed to this situation was the effective traffic management. Congestion was lower than in previous years, thanks to a staggered return and the lack of major accidents or breakdowns that usually cause massive traffic jams. The most notable queues occurred at critical points such as the AP-7, where additional lanes were opened to facilitate vehicle flow.
However, although there were no tragic deaths, some accidents with injuries were reported. A head-on collision on the N-II near Sidamon even required the intervention of firefighters to rescue several trapped passengers. These incidents underscore that, although the overall results are positive, there is always room for improvement and continued efforts towards safer mobility.
Despite the widespread success, the most problematic areas remain the same each year. In particular, sections near l’Ampolla and Roda de Berà to the north and Maçanet de la Selva to the south experienced typical congestion during these holiday days. To mitigate these recurring problems, measures such as additional lanes between Vilafranca del Penedès and Molins de Rei were implemented.
This milestone without fatalities is an important reminder of how good planning can transform critical periods like holidays into safe experiences for all travellers. Collaboration between local authorities and citizens is essential to maintain this positive trend towards a future where every journey is safe.
