A Historic Meeting at the Fira de Barcelona
The city of Barcelona has witnessed an unprecedented event: the first Global Progressive Mobilisation, which has been taking place since yesterday at the iconic Fira de Barcelona. This conclave, which brings together over 100 speakers from 41 countries, aims to unite forces and establish strategies to counter the rising tide of Trumpism and far-right movements that threaten democratic values worldwide.
Sponsored by prominent figures such as Spanish President Pedro Sánchez and his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the forum has addressed crucial topics such as gender equality, the fight against gender-based violence, and access to justice. During his speech, Colombian President Gustavo Petro highlighted how Spain has become a progressive beacon in Europe, especially in its stance on international conflicts like that of Iran.
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares emphasized the urgent need for global governance based on solid principles. “The challenges we face today know no borders,” he warned during a debate on the future of the international order. In this context, there was also discussion on how external interventions can affect vulnerable regions such as the Western Balkans.
Not only political leaders have had a voice; technology experts have also participated. Minister Óscar López took part in a roundtable where he underscored the importance of regulating the digital realm to protect fundamental rights. “It is critical to address how social media is used by extremist groups,” López stated, echoing the general consensus on the need to act swiftly against these threats.
As this historic summit progresses, one of the highlights is expected to take place today: the IV Defence of Democracy Meeting. This institutional event will bring together global progressive leaders to discuss concrete actions that strengthen democracies against extremism.
