A Call for Progressive Unity
At a crucial moment for international politics, Pedro Sánchez, the President of the Spanish Government and leader of the Socialist International, has called on leaders from around the world to unite in Barcelona on April 17 and 18. This event, named Global Progressive Mobilisation (GPM), aims to create a united front against the rising far-right wave that threatens democratic values and human rights.
The Fira de Barcelona will be the venue where prominent figures such as Inga Ruginiené, the Prime Minister of Lithuania, and David Lammy, the Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, will gather. Alongside them, other international leaders like Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, and Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, will share their visions on how to tackle current challenges.
Jaume Collboni, the Mayor of Barcelona, highlights the crucial role cities play in this struggle. “Major capitals must be beacons of resistance against the advance of extremism,” Collboni stated while announcing his participation in a panel dedicated to progressive mayors. The summit will also feature the virtual presence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who will not be able to attend in person but will send a message from the United States.
The current geopolitical context, marked by tensions such as the war between Iran and the United States, has intensified the urgency to establish a collective response. In this regard, Enma López, deputy spokesperson for the PSOE, emphasized that Europe must take a leading role in defending multilateralism and fundamental rights. “This world needs more answers,” she stressed during a preparatory meeting for the event.
Not only men will be at the forefront; women leaders like María Ressa, the Filipino journalist awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021, are also expected to provide their unique perspective on the challenges facing contemporary democracies. Her participation underscores the commitment to include diverse voices in this historic mobilization.
As the date of the GPM approaches, expectations are rising about what could be one of the most significant gatherings for progressive forces worldwide. With an agenda focused on defending essential values such as freedom of expression and social justice, this event promises to be an important milestone for those committed to building a more equitable future.
