The Mossos d'Esquadra and the Guardia Urbana arrested 53 people during the Mercè festivities, 86.8% for property crimes. The operation concluded without notable incidents in the celebration areas.

The special security operation for the Mercè in Barcelona ended with 53 arrests, according to the report made public by the Mossos d'Esquadra and the Guardia Urbana this Monday. The vast majority of the arrests, 86.8%, correspond to property crimes, mainly thefts and robberies.

The remaining arrests are distributed among crimes against individuals, outstanding warrants and judicial requests, and public health crimes. The two police forces describe the outcome of the operation as "positive".

"It developed normally and without notable incidents in the main celebration areas"

The nights of 25 and 26 September, the busiest nights of the major festival, ended without significant incidents. The evacuation of concert and activity areas was carried out in an orderly manner, according to the same source.

One of the innovations this year was the pilot test of the Punt Lila al móvil, a service to enhance prevention and attention to gender-based violence and LGTBI-phobic assaults in crowded festive environments.

The system operated on the nights of 25 and 26 September around the concerts on Avenida de la Reina María Cristina and at Bogatell beach. To activate it, wristbands and keychains with NFC technology were distributed, allowing discreet emergency alerts from mobile phones and contact with the attention service.

A total of 2,950 devices were distributed during 1,356 visits. The deployed Punt Lila points during the Mercè provided 11,926 pieces of information and carried out 28 interventions.

The report comes after a few days in which the city has returned to normal after the major festival. The data on arrests and assistance is now in the hands of the police forces and municipal services to evaluate next year the reinforcement in areas with higher concentrations of the public.
