Chemical incident in the Bufalvent industrial estate
On the morning of 26 May 2026, a chemical-related incident occurred at the company Aqualimp, located in the Bufalvent industrial estate of Manresa. The situation was triggered at 07:06 h, when an exothermic reaction was detected that generated a toxic cloud, forcing the activation of the special external emergency plan for the chemical sector of Catalonia (PLASEQCAT).
The Fire Brigade and the Mossos d’Esquadra quickly responded to the alert received around 07:15 h. Witnesses reported itching in their eyes and sighting a white cloud emanating from the industrial area. Upon arrival, the teams found a burning container that held chemical waste, including chlorine, raising concerns for public safety.
As a result of the incident, an immediate decision was made to restrict access to the affected area and to confine nearby businesses. Additionally, the temporary closure of schools in Castellgalí and Sant Vicenç de Castellet was ordered as a precautionary measure. Nine people were treated for mild symptoms related to exposure to toxic vapours; three were transferred to Althaia hospital for medical attention.
Ricard Costa, fire sub-inspector and head of the operation, indicated that the container was burning “latently,” suggesting that it may have been actively combusting for days prior. Firefighters worked to control the smoke plume and minimise its environmental impact.
Despite the initial scare, environmental measurements taken by specialized teams showed negative results regarding the presence of chlorine in the air. This allowed authorities to consider that no further confinements were necessary.
As the situation stabilised, a preventive device was maintained in the area while waiting to declare the episode closed. Technicians from the Department of Business and Labour will visit Aqualimp to investigate the exact causes behind the incident and ensure there are no future risks.
